What is in your heart?

We are currently doing a Lent study at our church based on the book 'Godforsaken' by Stephen Cottrell. Chapter two has an intersting look at not only Jesus' words from the cross, which are based on scripture, but it also looks at where do we turn to for words of comfort or anguish when we are in our deepest needs?

It looks at the fact that while from a young age we are no longer required or expected to be able to real things off by heart, that doesn't mean there is nothing in our memory banks to recall, it just often means there is nothing worthwhile in our memory banks, our hearts, that will sustain us. The book refers to a young man who when in distress the only thing that comes out of him is advertising jingles, as the Bible says 'out of the heart, the mouth speaks.' So what is inside you, it always amazes me when ever I'm in a shop and a song is being played from years ago, in fact decades ago, and I can sing practically every word, but in times of need, these songs are not going to sustain me, but the Word of God and even Hymns or Choruses that speak of God's loving presence and goodness, will sustain you and uplift you. It is important to have something inside you that is good and wholesome. I remember I used to listen to a lot of Bruce Springsteen then I suddenly realised that most of his songs were actually quite moody and depressing and could leave me quite moody and down, who needs that in their life to draw on? The Bible is quite clear on what we should be focusing on.

Philippians 4:8 New King James Version

Meditate on These Things

8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

You will only ever be able to withdraw from your Spirit what you have deposited in it.
