It's Burns night tonight!

In Scotland there will be many a celebration of Burns night, in Ayrshire where I come from there is a special fondness of this night. It will involve eating haggis, neeps and tatties and in most instances this will be washed down with a 'wee dram'. It commemorates the birth in 1759 of one of Scotland's most famous poets Robert (or should I say Rabbie) Burns, born in Alloway, Ayrshire. The village where I come from has what is called 'The Batchelors Club' a National Trust property authentically restored to the time of Burns, where it is claimed he danced and debated.

I often quote a line from one of his poems 'man's inhumanity to man'. Man's inhumanity to man was evident in his day (without 24 hour world wide news) and over 200 years later, we still see it, it's on our tv screens and news feeds every day of every year, continuing relentlessly towards what looks like the inevitable end of mankind itself.

Man's Inhumanity to Man

by Robert Burns

Many and sharp the numerous ills

Inwoven with our frame;

More pointed still, we make ourselves

Regret, remorse and shame;

And man, whose heaven-erected face

The smiles of love adorn,

Man's inhumanity to man,

Makes countless thousands mourn.

One of his other poems 'for a that and a that' finishes with a call to prayer..........

Then let us pray that come it may,

As come it will for a' that,

That sense and worth, o'er a' the earth,

May bear the gree, an' a' that.

For a' that, an' a' that,

It's coming yet, for a' that,

That man to man, the warld o'er,

Shall brothers be for a' that.

In the late 18th century a plough man from Ayrshire penned lines of apparent despair at mankind, but of hope 'with heaven-erected faith' and of Faith, 'let us pray'.

Today as we continue to hope and pray for man to love one another and to treat each other like brothers, as Jesus calls us to do, we can see in the Bible that this will happen one day, when Jesus returns. As we watch the end times prophesies of the Bible found in Matthew 24 unfold in front of us we would have to say that Jesus is coming back soon, but then how long has man being saying that?

Jesus is the only hope for the world, no other religion or faith system offers the same hope for all. While Christianity has been used and abused by man for his own aims, the true Jesus message, The Truth of love and hope for all, is the only way forward, it is the only way that the earth, created by God, will survive.

John 14:6 New King James Version

6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Maranatha, come Lord Jesus!
